Fellowship Benefits

Each year, USC selects ten Schaeffer Fellows who join a national cohort of 50 students from five universities. Together, Fellows participate in a robust summer program that blends full-time government internships with opportunities to explore public service, develop professional networks, and strengthen transferable skills for any career path. To learn more about applying, review the Selection Process.

The Schaeffer Fellows program provides comprehensive support before, during, and after the summer internship experience.

Living Stipend

USC Schaeffer Fellows receive a $6,000 stipend, disbursed in three payments over the summer, to help offset rent and living expenses. Fellows interning in Washington, D.C. are eligible to receive an additional $500 relocation stipend.

Students with demonstrated financial need may request supplemental funding. Contact Willa Erickson at werickso@usc.edu for details. While the stipend helps reduce financial barriers, Fellows should anticipate some out-of-pocket costs.

Alumni Mentorship

Each Schaeffer Fellow is paired with a USC alumnus, often a program alum, who serves as a 1:1 professional mentor throughout the summer. Fellows meet with their mentor 3-4 times to reflect on their internship experience, discuss career goals, and receive guidance on expanding their professional network.

Schaeffer Fellows Summit

All Fellows are awarded additional full funding to attend the Schaeffer Fellows Summit in Washington, D.C. in June. This exclusive event includes interactive professional development sessions, networking opportunities, and group exploration of the nation’s capital.

Virtual Orientation & Resource Guide

Fellows receive comprehensive and practical guidance through a virtual orientation and resource guide designed to support a successful internship and meaningful summer experience.

Schaeffer Fellows Network

Fellows gain access to an exclusive online network that connects peers and alumni and provides curated resources throughout the summer and beyond.

Supportive Supervisors

Professional staff in each internship office work with Schaeffer Fellows to design a purposeful, growth-oriented internship experience.

Institutional Partners
