Applicants
The Schaeffer Fellows program seeks highly motivated students who demonstrate a strong academic background, professionalism, and a commitment to public service.
Applicants
Ideal candidates are mature, detail-oriented, and self-motivated. Competitive applicants will demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills, the ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines, and a collaborative approach to working with others.
Competitive applicants:
- have a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA
- are a current USC sophomore or junior. Seniors may apply only if enrolling in 12 or more required undergraduate units in fall 2026. Preference is given to candidates with at least one full academic year of undergraduate study remaining after the summer. Progressive Degree students must not begin master’s-only degree requirements in the fall.
- have relevant experience and/or coursework demonstrating preparation for a rigorous government internship. While prior public service is not required, competitive candidates will demonstrate transferable skills and a strong interest in government operations. All academic fields are eligible.
- are able to work 40 hours/week for 10 weeks during the summer. Candidates may apply for consideration for university-secured internships and/or self-secured internships identified independently. Review the “Selection Process” tab for more information.
Applicants Without U.S. Citizenship: Due to certain federal restrictions, applicants without U.S. citizenship may encounter challenges securing positions with federal government offices and agencies. However, applicants without U.S. citizenship are eligible to apply for the Schaeffer Fellows program with a self-secured internship.
Leave of Absence: A leave of absence does not automatically make a student ineligible for the program; however, preference will be given to candidates who are enrolled full-time at USC.
